ARIZONA TRAIL

The Arizona Trail is a continuous trail that will traverse Arizona for approximately 800 miles from the Mexican border to the Utah border.  The Arizona Trail is intended to be a primitive, long distance trail that highlights the state's topographic, biologic, historic and cultural diversity.  The trail is the result of the dream of Dale Shewalter, a hiking enthusiast and schoolteacher from Flagstaff.  During the summer of 1985, Shewalter completed a scouting of a trail. While walking from Nogales to the Utah border, he tentatively mapped a route of trail systems that traversed the state from south to north.  Since that time, detailed route planning for the trail has been essentially completed and the majority of the segments have been constructed.  The Arizona Trail is divided into 43 separate trail passages, 13 of which are of specific interest to the Green Valley Hiking Club since the club routinely schedules hikes encompassing these passages.  Click “Here” for the connection to the web site that defines these passages and indicates their state of completion.
