A bit of club history In August 1981, Bill and Jane Necker started the Green Valley Hiking Group by organizing a hike every other Thursday morning with Jane Necker leading the group and Bill acting as a sweep to make sure no one was left behind. That first hike had thirty people. Eventually, interest became so great that as many as 85 people showed up on the alternating Thursdays. In 1984, Bill and Jane organized weekly Thursday hikes. In January 1985, two hikes a week were begun with the hikes repeated the next week under the same leaders. In August, hikes were limited to 40 hikers, and in November a system of "A" and "B" hikes was instituted from which our present system has evolved. This year we have around 500 members with twelve hikes each Thursday during the winter months. Hike limits have been reduced to a maximum of 25 for greater enjoyment. |
